Our personal “Firestarter” – the “Dance Music Manual by Rick Snoman”

“If you were going to just have just one book on production on your bookshelf, you couldn´t really go far wrong with this one.”

If you haven´t worked your way up the ladder in a recording studio starting with making the tea and you decide to lock yourself away in your free time to  find out how to produce Dance Music from scratch – you fairly quickly discover:

a. Its difficult!

b. You need some serious help!

This was the first book I turned to, to help me get a handle on the million things that I couldn´t get my head around.

The Author Rick Snoman (Obviously a cool guy) has in the past remixed for the likes of Madonna, Moby, Kylie, Massive Attack and he packs all the experience he can into this encyclopedia of must know stuff about production, equipment, Dance Music Genres, DJ-ing, MIDI, Sound Design, Speaker Response, Arrangement, etc etc etc etc.

If you were going to have just one book on production on your bookshelf, you couldn´t really go far wrong with this one. In fact, as far as I know, there is only this book that deals specifically with Dance Music for producers. You won´t find yourself reading about how to record rock drums with overhead mics or how to process Heavey Metal guitar riffs.

It will take you ages to absorb the info, and you´ll keep coming back to it years later for some nugget of info you vaguely remember reading.

My copy was edition 2 and is now a bit dated, with discussions about how best to burn demos to CD or DAT. for example. Turning to the internet for a quick search, I notice its currently at edition 4. I´m tempted to get the new version now!

In addition to the book, it looks like Rick has set up a complete Dance Music Academy in Manchester, with loads of Video Tutorials to compliment the book. If his Vids are as good as the book they´ll be a no-brainer too. You can check the web site out here: https://www.dancemusicproduction.com/
